The hotel was deeded to SAGA Corporation by Preservation North Carolina in 2015, with covenants in place to assure the community that the renovations would be done according to the proper restoration guidelines. However, those covenants were not followed, and the property now sits abandoned, derelict, and a threat to the town with vandalism and possibly even worse, such as a fire that could potentially destroy our downtown and historic colonial courthouse next to the hotel.
It is now time for the community to act and demand that Preservation North Carolina buy back the hotel as is stipulated in the deed if SAGA doesn’t abide by the deed’s covenants.
